Two Days in Bromont, QC. CSC members meeting, Teledyne-DALSA, C2MI, IBM site visits; NSMC Event 2024

As events of CHIPS Month Canada continues, I found myself at the beautiful city of Bromont, QC from Oct 21 - 22, an important part of the Northeast Semiconductor Manufacturing Corridor (aka The Corridor). Throughout these two days, I had the opportunity to visit Teledyne-DALSA, Centre de Collaboration MiQro Innovation (C2MI), and IBM Bromont.

Day One

Day one started with a site visit at Teledyne-DALSA, a manufacturing facility that specializes in MEMS, CCD, and imaging solutions. Thank you Claude and Sébastien for hosting us with a detail visit of the fab floor, showing us the different fabs on site and how they operate.

Next visit we found ourselves at C2MI, practically right next door across the street. Marie-Josée and her team graciously gave us a site tour, showcasing the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. The Canada's Semiconductor Council (CSC) then held its members meeting at C2MI.

We had a working lunch meeting with the ACCIO Catalonia team. We learned about the Catalonia semiconductor ecosystem and success stories from the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech, and OpenChip.

We then proceeded to meet with Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada (ISED) representatives, with a CSC readout from its AI Chips working group.

Next, we proceeded to visit the facility of IBM Bromont, which is the largest IBM semiconductor assembly and testing facility in the world. As soon as we entered the facility, is a room with IBM's quantum computer! We proceeded with a tour of this very large facility, where we got to see the products, the manufacturing equipment and test equipment that are the heart and soul of this site.

To end the day, we had the NSMC networking reception at Chateau Bromont as the official start of the NSMC event for the following day.

Day Two

The day began with a breakfast meet and greet session at C2MI, with more than 100 attendees and representatives from the semiconductor ecosystem, US Trade Commission, ISED, Government of Quebec, to name a few. With the partnership of NY CREATES and C2MI setting the stage, the focus of discussions were supply chain resiliency, cross-border collaboration, and workforce talent.

One panel discussion topic that is dear to the core of TSS was "The role of mature semiconductors nodes". The focus of TSS' memory interface development has always been to develop the LATEST DDR standards in mature technology nodes, so that SoC companies building their products in these mature technology nodes can also benefit from the increased memory bandwidth and memory capacity that the latest DRAM has to offer, at a lower productization price point.

In the afternoon, there were two breakout interactive sessions with one focused on Workforce Talent while the other on Cross-border Collaboration.

I look forward to the next NSMC event to connect with everyone again.
